Welcome
If you are reading this you
have been seduced as so many others have by the visual, audible
and of course the seat in the pants appeal of the dual carb installation
on the Fiat 124 Spider. The carbs are both functional and beautiful
additions to your 124 project.
The installation of this worthwhile
modification to your car, unlike some other changes you might
make, will have almost no negative aspects, other than a modest
drain to your restoration budget. Unlike some American muscle
car induction modifications, you will notice no driveablility
problems and your mileage, if you care about such things, might
even improve depending on your driving habits. You will also
have four large tubes that will swallow a silver dollar. One
for each of your cylinders. This much carburation on so small
an engine with almost no bad manners is quite an engineering
feat. You stand to reap the benefits of the engineering and experience
of some of the worlds best experts in carburation and some extremely
talented owners who have volunteered their ideas and cars to
help you with your installation.
What are they Like?
I've lived with dual IDFs on
my Fiats since 1974 and can testify to their day to day docile
behavior. And to their performance. They probably add as much
to the "driver's performance" as they do to the engine.
The sound of all four chokes opening up and the intake roar is
music to any driver's ears. Alan Lofland calls it their Varoom,
Varoom, appeal. They can sound just a good as they work.
Every effort will be made to
give you pictures and information that you may need to decide
what kind of installation you might like on your car. I'll even
put in a couple of words for some nice single carb and fuel injection
systems for you to look over before you make your decision.
Well... I'm probably preaching
to the choir, so lets get on with some reinforcement for those
of you that are either borderline decision makers, have maritial
problems, or would just like some herd reinforcement (there are
a bunch of us out there already enjoying the benefits) with some
useful information. I'll try to include as many engine types
as I have information available to me. So if you are trying to
do this with a 2L or a 1438, there will be something in it for
you.
As all information you might
encounter on the internet. This information is only a guide and
the opinion of the author and the various participants. It is
up to you to determine your capabilities and the appropriateness
of this modification. If you have doubts about your abilities
or your facilities to complete this project please consider this
guide to be entertainment. I don't want to hear how you burned
your house down because I didn't tell you to connect and tighten
up the fuel lines before you attempt to start your car. Please
use some common sense before attempting this project and make
all of the necessary preparations. Buy a good repair manual and
follow all of the recommended safety suggestions. Remember, this
is a hobby.
This project will be put up
in sections as my marital status allows. So with no further ramblings,
here we go.
