Dual Weber IDFs
and the
DOHC Spider Engine

Those That have Gone Before

Let's hope your carbs don't come from an installation that looks like this. These are the IDFs on green that remained under water for over three weeks in the great flood of 93. Green is still awaiting restoration as this is written, but the carbs live on; installed in "Red" as documented on his website. The odd aluminum air cleaner is from a FWD mid 80s Ford Escort. As bad as it looks, this engine has just been cleaned with a pressure washer before the picture was taken. Mud completely filled in and covered the engine like icing on a cake.

The carbs and waffle intake manifold were purchased from Al Cosintino when he had his shop in Daytona Beach in 1973, so they should be representative of "original" IDF technology as relating to Fiats. They worked without any attention at all for almost 20 years until they were caught in the disaster. Thanks to the efforts of Pete Angel, the carbs are well on their way to 20 more years of fun on the front end of a highly tuned spider.

Lyn Lofland's Spider

This is the incredibly restored and detailed engine bay of the chocolate brown spider that Alan Lofland prepared for his wife Lyn. He has chosen a unique fuel pressure regulator (in the foreground) and some nice Weber air cleaners. Aftermarket air cleaners allow full view of the engine and also facilitate easy access to the idle and air adjustment screws.

Alan has used the Fiat factory waffle manifold. This shot was taken at MOFLO 2002. The car is driven regularly to and from events as well as a weekend warrior. Alan reports no problems with this setup. He uses the stock fiat cable throttle linkage mounted on the intake cam cover. You can see the mechanism behind the rear air cleaner.

 Red's Installation

Here's the finished installation in Red. In addition to the dual carbs, you might notice that the engine has been modified with a dual cooling hose/in head thermostat.

The air cleaners are the cast Redline models that complement the rest of the castings. Red previously had a turtleback aircleaner. The TB is larger and painted like a larger version of the stock aircleaner. The smaller carbs allow warmer air and are quite a bit louder than the TB which has a nice mellow intake sound. A picture of the turtleback is available here.

These carbs and manifold have been removed from the green spider above and after a through cleaning they have been working well for the past year with various air cleaners and air horns. I've since replaced the rear carb as the one from Green seems to have a plugged idle jet passage on the #4 cylinder. It will be replaced as soon as I get it fixed.
